A day in the life of an insurance broker

August 08, 2024

What’s it like to be a broker in one of the Thames Valley’s top independent insurance brokers?

Morning – Client communication

I spend a large part of my day communicating with clients. After grabbing a cup of tea first thing, I start by going through emails and voice messages. These will be from clients who have queries on their policies or insurers who may have outstanding questions to assist the underwriting process. I deal with all types of commercial insurance, including property, management liability, professional indemnity, cyber and many more so I like to be organised for the day ahead to make the most of my time.

Mid-Morning – Task management

It’s important to keep on top of my daily tasks so I will take some time to catch up with clients and chase insurers to ensure all outstanding queries are completed in a timely and efficient manner.

Early-Mid Afternoon – Renewals

My role involves managing an existing book of client accounts, so I’ll take time to look at policies due for renewal. This is an opportunity to catch up with clients to review pre-renewal information and renewal terms to ensure they have the right level of cover, and to identify potential risks. Sometimes renewing a policy is straightforward. Other times, I will suggest approaching the market for alternatives which involves preparing a presentation to put to the market and negotiating with insurers to get the best coverage at the best price. I really enjoy building relationships with clients and offering impeccable customer service.

Late Afternoon – Training

On-the-job training is an important part of my job to keep ahead of new products and markets. Sometimes I’ll attend seminars, webinars or training sessions provided by an insurance company to help me better understand their products. Or I might complete online training modules to keep up with industry rules and regulations. I make time for training because it enhances my professional expertise and enables me to help our clients.

It’s great working for Macbeth because it’s independent and our CEO Paul Macbeth knows exactly what’s going on in the business. I have a good team around me and it feels like a big family.
